Build-to-Rent Community Interior Design in Des Moines
Build-to-rent interior design in Des Moines is the design of single-family rental communities as one product: a central amenity building, a leasing space, furnished model homes and a finish package that can be repeated across every house.
Suburban build-to-rent in the metro follows the data center and corporate expansion, and the households it serves chose a house on purpose. They want a yard, a garage and quiet, and they expect the kitchen and finishes to match a home they could have bought. We are a national interior design firm based in Irvine, California, and we plan these communities for owners who want the detail of a for-sale neighborhood with the durability of a rental.

Employers are adding roles around the metro, and the people moving for those roles often want space before they commit to buying. Microsoft bought about 600 acres in the Woodward Eco Business Park in Iowa for a possible data center campus, and a spokesperson said the project is at the earliest phase of planning and development. Whatever happens on that land, it signals that technical and corporate employers are looking hard at central Iowa, and that tends to bring relocating families who rent first. The metro gained 13,782 people in 2024, its biggest nominal increase since the turn of the century by CoStar's reading of Census estimates, and some of those newcomers may want a yard before they commit to a mortgage.
A renter who picked a house over an apartment has a different checklist. Storage matters, so closets and garage organization show up on the tour. Outdoor space matters, so patios and porches are furnished as rooms.
The amenity center in a Des Moines rental neighborhood

A horizontal community has no lobby and no corridor, so the amenity center becomes the only shared roof. It usually carries the leasing desk, a lounge, a small fitness room and a place for residents to work, and it has to feel welcoming to someone arriving in a car with a child and a dog.
We keep the palette warm and modern, in line with the practical taste of the metro, and we lean on natural textures that echo brick and limestone without copying them. Seating is mixed so a single resident, a pair of neighbors and a small group each find a place. Because the building is the community's front door in every season, the entry gets the same attention as the lounge: a deep mat zone, flooring that cleans in minutes and hooks and benches where boots and coats can land.
- Leasing desk placed to greet the arriving car, not the back wall.
- Work nooks and a small meeting table for residents who work from home.
- Entry built for wet boots, strollers and pets.
Finish packages for Des Moines rental houses that turn

A build-to-rent owner is buying the same finish decision dozens of times, so each choice has to hold across scale and across turnovers. We build a short palette of flooring, paint, hardware and counters that can be ordered repeatedly and replaced without a redesign. Hard-surface flooring in the main living areas handles humid summers and winter grit better than carpet, and a scrubbable paint finish saves repaint cost between residents.
The goal is a house that photographs well and still looks cared for after several leases.

A furnished model shows the renter how a plan lives, and it needs to be photographed and toured long before every house is complete. We furnish a model to show the floor plan, the storage and the outdoor space without staging so heavily that the next resident feels they cannot make it their own.
We have not completed a project in Iowa, and we do not claim to have. We do bring a team that works mostly outside Southern California, with our own receiving warehouse for inspection, storage and coordinated delivery, and installation partners across the country who place furniture alongside our designers. That setup lets an owner order a whole model set, a clubhouse and the leasing office in one coordinated delivery.
Questions
What is build-to-rent interior design?
It is interior design for communities built as rentals from the start: an amenity center, leasing space, model homes and a repeatable finish package. The aim is a for-sale look that survives repeated turnover.
How do you choose finishes for a Des Moines build-to-rent house?
We pick a short palette that can be reordered easily and withstands humid summers, winter grit and daily use. Hard flooring in living areas and scrubbable paint are common choices, with accents kept simple so replacements are quick.
Do you design the clubhouse and the model homes together?
We can. Planning them together keeps the palette consistent between the leasing space, the amenity center and the furnished house a prospect tours.
Can you work on a build-to-rent community in Iowa if you are based in California?
Yes. We have not completed a project in Iowa, but most of our work is outside Southern California. We use our own receiving warehouse and installation partners nationwide, with designers on site for install.
