Senior Living and Active Adult Interior Design in Chicago
Senior living interior design in Chicago covers independent living, assisted living, memory care and 55+ active adult communities, each with its own rules for lighting, contrast, wayfinding and dining. In June 2024, Compass Datacenters kicked off development of five hyperscale data centers on a nearly 200-acre former Sears headquarters site in Hoffman Estates, the kind of redevelopment that pulls jobs, and the relatives who hold them, into the metro. Redeveloped office campuses and mature inner-ring suburbs also add mid-rise rental and senior housing.
Level Up Interiors is a national commercial interior design firm based in Irvine, California, with its own Southern California warehouse and installation partners across the country, ready to serve Chicago senior living owners.
Winter light and contrast inside Chicago senior living buildings
Read more
Chicago interiors have to work through long gray winters and short, bright summers, and older eyes feel that swing more than most. A lobby that looks cheerful in July can look flat and dim in February, so lighting needs layers: warm ambient fixtures, lamps at seating, and brighter task light where residents read, play cards or take a meal.
Contrast does quiet work. A floor that is clearly different from the wall, a handrail that stands out, a door that reads as a door. These are not decorative choices. They help residents who see less clearly find their way without help, and they cut down on glare from bright lake-influenced daylight on polished floors. We plan color and finish together so a corridor stays calm and legible, and so each neighborhood within a building has its own anchor, such as a distinct art piece or color, that residents learn to recognize.
Dining, activity and club rooms for independent living and 55+ residents in Chicago

Independent living and active adult residents make choices. They pick the dining room, the club, the fitness room or the front porch based on whether the place feels like a good use of their time. Practical, no-nonsense comfort and a strong neighborhood identity matter here, so these rooms need to feel like part of the community rather than an institution.
Dining is the anchor. A mix of table sizes, comfortable chairs with arms, good acoustics and lighting that makes food and faces look good. Activity rooms need flexible furniture and storage that keeps supplies out of sight. A clubhouse for an active adult community can lean toward hospitality, with a bar or coffee counter, a gathering room and a fitness space that suits long winters. Interior warmth from brick, limestone and terra cotta tones, plus masonry accents and darker metals, ties the building to the neighborhood around it.
Assisted living and memory care interiors in Chicago

Assisted living and memory care carry different priorities than independent living. Care teams need clear sightlines. Residents need familiar, homelike rooms that do not feel clinical. Memory care adds specific demands: calm color, even lighting without hard shadows, and cues that help residents find their room, the dining area and the outdoors.
Finishes must handle heavy cleaning and equipment without announcing it. We choose furniture that is stable, easy to stand up from and easy to clean, and flooring that reads as a single plane. Winter matters indoors too. A well-lit sunroom or garden-facing lounge gives residents a place to be near daylight and gives families a comfortable place to visit when the weather keeps everyone inside.
Families on the Chicago senior living tour
Read more
Families often decide the tour, and some are relocating to be near relatives who took jobs in the region. They arrive with a long list of worries and a short amount of time. The lobby, the dining room and one model apartment have to answer most of those worries quickly: is it clean, is it warm, is it dignified, would my parent want to be here.
We stage the model apartment as a real home, with familiar furniture scale, good seating, a table for a meal and places for photographs. Furniture, art and accessories come through our Southern California warehouse for receiving and inspection, then are installed by partners across the country with our designers on site.
The city itself is steady rather than surging. The Census Bureau estimate puts the population of Chicago at more than 2.73 million in 2025, up by more than 5,000 on the year before. A gain that modest argues for a community that wins on the quality of its rooms, not on a rising tide of new households.
Questions
What does senior living interior design in Chicago cover?
It covers independent living, assisted living, memory care and active adult communities. We plan lighting, color, contrast, wayfinding, dining and activity spaces, and we select and install furniture and finishes.
How does winter affect senior living design in Chicago?
Long gray winters mean daylight is scarce for months. We layer warm lighting, add bright sunrooms or garden-facing lounges where possible, and use contrast so residents can find their way in lower light.
Do you design active adult clubhouses as well as care settings?
Yes. Active adult communities call for hospitality-style gathering rooms, fitness and dining, while care settings call for clearer sightlines and calmer finishes. We shape the design to the resident group.
Can you help a project if the owner is based in another state?
Yes. Most of our projects are outside Southern California, and we manage selection, procurement, delivery and installation from Irvine with installation partners across the country.
