Student Housing Interior Design in Detroit
In Detroit, student housing interior design means designing and furnishing the purpose-built communities near campus where students live, study and see friends. These buildings are leased to a young, quick-deciding renter and turned over every year, so they need to look good on a tour and survive a hard move-out.
We design them from our Irvine office, and Michigan is one of the states where we have completed work.
Where student housing fits in the Detroit rental market

Student renters choose among every kind of apartment in a metro, so the surrounding market sets the bar. Detroit's rental stock is a mix of new suburban garden-style and townhome communities and older downtown and Midtown buildings redeveloped into apartments. A purpose-built student community competes with those on location, price and how it feels when a student walks in.
Students also read the regional economy. Methode Electronics, for one, relocated its headquarters to Southfield, Oakland County, a move Governor Whitmer announced in October 2026 with $3.7 million in capital investment and at least 90 new jobs. Employers like that give a student a reason to picture a future in the metro, and an owner a reason to design a building that is a proper first home rather than a dormitory.
Study rooms and lounges students use in Detroit communities

Students will use a shared room before their bedroom only if it is better than their bedroom. Detroit's long gray winters make that bar higher, because a student looking for a place to spend an afternoon needs somewhere warm, bright and comfortable.
We plan a range of spaces: quiet study with generous power, group tables for project work, a lounge for television and games, and a kitchen that works for a crowd. Lighting is layered so a room feels welcoming on a gray January afternoon. Seating is mixed, with fixed booths, movable chairs and a few softer pieces, so a room does not feel empty when it is half used.
Furnished student units built for the Detroit move-out

A furnished student unit is delivered once and used hard. Bed frames, desks, chairs and soft seating are chosen for strength first, then for style, and every piece should be easy to move, clean and replace.
Winter adds wet boots and salt to the list. Flooring in the entry and kitchen should clean easily, and upholstery should be a performance fabric that shrugs off spills. We keep the palette warm and neutral and let color live in pillows, art and shared-room finishes, which are cheaper to refresh than the furniture in the units.
- Sturdy frames and joinery that withstand repeated moves
- Performance fabrics and wipeable surfaces
- A single furniture set per unit type, to make replacements simple
- Color concentrated in items that are inexpensive to refresh
The pre-leasing tour of a Detroit student community
Read more
Pre-leasing is won on the tour, and often the model and the amenity spaces are the only finished parts a student or parent will see. The route should be planned: a clear arrival, a leasing area that looks lived in, a model unit furnished with exactly what the student will receive, and an amenity space that shows the building at its best.
On a Michigan tour in winter, the first impression starts at the door. A warm, well-lit entry with durable flooring and a place to leave a coat tells a parent that someone thought about how this building works day to day.
Questions
What does student housing interior design in Detroit include?
It covers the amenity and study spaces, the leasing area, the model unit and the furnishing of each student unit. The goal is a community that leases well on the tour and holds up through repeated move-outs.
Do you name the campus in your marketing materials for these projects?
We design to the student and the building rather than to a particular campus. The palette and amenities are chosen to suit the renter and the local climate, and the owner decides how the property is presented.
Can you furnish a student building we already own?
Yes. A furniture refresh or a single amenity room is a welcome scope. We procure, receive and inspect the furnishings, then coordinate installation so a unit is ready before residents arrive.
How do you handle turnover wear in a furnished unit?
We specify strong frames, wipeable finishes and a limited set of repeatable pieces. When a chair or table fails, it can be reordered from the same line instead of being redesigned.
